Cinema Blend Post: 10 Most Badass Women of 2014 TV

I’m at Cinema Blend with my list of the 10 women who were absolutely out of control amazing this year on TV. Let’s be honest, there were TONS of awesome ladies to choose from. This year had so many amazing, intricate female characters gracing our television screens.

I had the nearly impossible task of narrowing down my favorites to a list of merely ten amazing women. I hope you’ll join me at Cinema Blend to see the list that I cooked up, and let me know here or over at CB who else you think belongs on the list! Here’s a peek at the article:

This has been an awesome year for women on TV with some truly awesome characters, and thankfully, the ladies aren’t beholden to any one specific network or even format. From premium cable to network television to basic cable, these ladies are different ages and different nationalities, but all of them kick some serious ass. Give them a problem, they’ll solve it. Give them a fight, they won’t back down.

Here are 2014’s 10 most badass women…

Claire (Outlander)

I feel like anyone who can be trapped in a completely different time period, manage to (mostly) keep their cool, and even start a life in this different era deserves to be on the list of badass women. Claire has taken a scary, crappy situation, and she’s managed to find the good in it. And, of course, by “the good” I mean her sexy Scottish soul mate, Jamie Fraser…

Cinema Blend Post: Orphan Black 3 Trailer!!!

Guys! It’s time for a Clone Club Party!!!

clone-dance-party5Really though, it’s time to get excited. While I was certainly amped to see the first teaser trailer for Orphan Black Season 3, I was kind of bummed that the teaser was such a…well, such a tease. There weren’t any clones in the trailer, and all we got was a close up of some cell division. I’m sure the close up of crazy science got some of us excited…

great scott

…but I really wanted to see my girls in the Clone Club. So I was SO STOKED to see an actual trailer for Season 3 of Orphan Black, and let me just tell you this season looks like it will be NUTS. Just check out this picture that BBC America released from Season 3:

sarah and rudyA showdown between Sarah Manning and Marian’s crazy guy clone (also known as “Rudy”)? I cannot WAIT to see what goes down! So that’s enough waiting. I’ve got the trailer for you over at Cinema Blend.

Cinema Blend Post: The Walking Dead/ Love Actually Mashup

Who doesn’t remember this moment from Love Actually?

Or this moment from The Walking Dead?

It seems that I’m not the only one who has had trouble reconciling the fact that the man behind this sweet though slightly sketchy–let’s not forget this is his best friend’s new wife–gesture from Love Actually is also the man who, at one point, killed a man by chomping on his throat on The Walking Dead. A guy named Charlie Farrell has clearly also struggled with this, and has responded by giving the world a tremendous Christmas gift: a Walking Dead/Love Actually mash-up. I’ve got it all for you on Cinema Blend!

Head over to Cinema Blend to watch the mash-up!

Cinema Blend Post: Star Wars and the Mysterious Captain Phasma

Hey, guys! So the end of this year has been nutty with me starting at Cinema Blend and entering into crunch time for my studio’s production of The Nutcracker. Because of that, I’ve been a bit scarce around here, and I apologize for that. Things will get back to normal once Nutcracker ends, I promise! For now, I’m at Cinema Blend talking about a new character that is headed our way on The Force Awakens. I hope you’ll join me over there to talk about this “Captain Phasma” person. Seriously am I the only one who thinks that’s a dumb name?? Honestly, with all the fuss over “Saber-Gate“…

awesome lightsaber

…you’d think there would be more hubbub over giving a character a name that makes him sound like he’s Captain Planet’s right hand man, amirite?

Also? That light saber is actually awesome, so…anyway…On to my Cinema Blend article…

Last week brought the clever, trading card-themed release of several character names for Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens. That adorable droid that looks like a mash-up of a soccer ball and R2-D2 is named BB-8. The sith with that arguably awesome lightsaber is named Kylo Ren, and Jason Boyega’s character is named Finn. However, the name that has really got Star Wars fans talking is Captain Phasma. Who exactly is Captain Phasma?

Prior to Disney’s character name release, Disney filed copyright applications for each of their characters names that were a part of the release. However, Stitch Kingdom has uncovered that along with the characters registered who were represented in the teaser trailer, allowing us to put a name to the face (or back, in Kylo Ren’s case), a “Captain Phasma” was also a registered name…

Cinema Blend Post: The Walking Dead Needs Some Awards, Guys

We live in a world where Transformers: Age of Extinction is being promoted for Oscar consideration, but The Walking Dead still hasn’t gotten a Golden Globe or an Emmy. That is completely nuts, amirite? I’m at Cinema Blend talking about it, and offering my reasons why The Walking Dead absolutely deserves some big awards.

The nominees for the 2015 Golden Globes were announced this morning. In addition to yet another year of snubs for the amazing Tatiana Maslany and the cast ofOrphan Black, there is another show that is noticeably missing from the nominees this year: AMC’s The Walking Dead. The Walking Dead has only gotten better with each new season, and it certainly deserves to start getting recognition from the likes of the Globes and the Emmys. Let’s talk about why The Walking Dead needs to start winning some awards.

The Lead Actor Is Great

Andrew Lincoln has managed to create such an interesting and engaging lead character in Rick Grimes. It’s been so exciting–and a bit tragic–to watch him transform from the moral, frightened cop to this stone-cold, badass walker fighter. 2014 has been a year of extreme change for the group–and Rick in particular. After a great deal of loss, betrayal, and tragedy, Rick has truly adapted into quite the predator in this new, harsh world. Because the show began with Rick waking from his coma, we have gotten to learn about this new world through Rick’s eyes, which makes his journey much more impactful for the audience. Rick’s come a long way, and Lincoln has made Rick’s journey a believable and engaging one, deserving of a best actor nod….

Cinema Blend Post: Doctor Who Christmas Special Trailer

Christmas Day is inching closer, and that means that we’re one day closer to the Doctor Who Christmas special! I’ve already posted a clip from the Doctor Who Christmas special, and now I’m over at Cinema Blend with the official trailer for the special. I hope you’ll join me over there to check it out!

The big question circling this year’s Christmas special is, of course, the fate of Clara Oswald. Will she continue travelling with the Doctor into the coming year, or will the Christmas special be her last hurrah? The official word from the BBC is that we’ll have to wait and watch the special to find out. However, I’ve got to say after watching Clara try to unsuccessfully erase the words “you are dying” from that chalkboard in the trailer, I’m pretty concerned for her fate.

Rumors had been circulating over the summer that Clara would be done travelling with the Doctor after this year’s Christmas special. After the Season 8 finale, however, the internet starting lighting up with more rumors that actress Jenna Louise-Coleman had gone back on her choice to leave the show…

Oscars I Think Transforms: Age of Extinction Should Actually Be Nominated For

If you haven’t heard by now, Paramount is actually, seriously promoting Transformers: Age of Extinction for Oscar nominations–including the big ones, Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. You can check out the post I did for Cinema Blend to get all of the details. I’ve got to be honest here. While I love the idea of the Academy including more box office hits to the list of Oscar-nominated, I can’t help but cringe at the thought of this movie actually getting to call itself an Oscar nominee.

However, I figure I’m just being a snob. Maybe Age of Extinction should get an Oscar or two. So, for your consideration, here are a few Oscars I think Age of Extinction deserves:

Best Dinobot in a Supporting Role

He was metal and he breathed fire. An inspired, transfixing performance, indeed. I only wish the dinobot had more time on camera. Five stars.

Best Confused, Frown, Sexy Face By An Actor In A Lead Role

This look is classic Whalberg. Is he confused? Is he angry? Is he vengeful? Is he trying to seduce you? Who knows. Only Marky Mark and his mystical, furrowed brow knows.

Best Failed Attempt To Hide a Boston Accent By An Actor In A Lead Role

I’m sorry to pick on you, Mark, but you guys, can we all just agree that he just can’t do any sort of an accent other than his native Boston accent? He always, always sounds Bostonian. I think we all need to make a pact that if we ever plan to cast Mark Whalberg in an upcoming project, he always gets to play a guy from Boston. Either that, or we need to collectively agree as a movie going audience that we don’t hear his accent. Kind of an Emperor’s New Clothes–er, accent–situation.

Most Unnecessary Relationship and Legal Justification by Actors in Supporting Roles

He’s 20, she’s 17. Legally, he’s an adult and she’s a minor. However, the brains behind Age of Extinction wanted the two of them to be together, and they wanted the characters to be 20 and 17. Instead of questioning the right or wrongness of portraying that relationship onscreen, the moviemakers instead took time out of the film to create a thorough, extensive explanation how their relationship was legally acceptable (citing the Romeo and Juliet law). It was awkward, weird, and felt unnecessary. Why they didn’t just make the fictitious character 18, we’ll never know.

Best Explosions Of All Time. Okay, Michael? If We Say You’re The Best, Will You Cool It?

I don’t know what else he wants. Maybe if we all say he’s amazing and beautiful and brilliant, he’ll cool it with the Excesses of Explosion Films with a Flimsy Plot. Or maybe it will only make him stronger… It’s a chance we’ll just have to take.

The actual Oscar nominees are announced on January 15, 2015. We’ll have to see where the Autobots assemble among the Academy’s list of nominated pictures. Do you think the film deserves an Oscar? Let me know in the comments!

Cinema Blend Post: Shiny Firefly Animation

I meant to share this with you guys last week, but that didn’t happen. However, I’m talking about something pretty fun in this post, so I thought it was basically to gorram amazing to not share this post I wrote for Cinema Blend with you guys–even if it is a week later.

Also, be sure to check out my writer’s page on Cinema Blend to see all the stuff I’m writing over there, or you can follow my Cinema Blend pin board on Pinterest–I also have a board for this blog and my posts at The Mary Sue. I’d love to hang out with you guys over there!

Anyway, on to the post. I’m talking about an amazing, 2.5 second-long Firefly animation created by artist Stephen Byrne. It’s a spot-on clip that Firefly fans will love, and it packs quite a surprising punch of feels in a very short period of time. It also features my favorite intergalactic couple, Zoe and Wash, which makes it immediately amazing.

So make like a leaf on the wind, and soar on over at Cinema Blend to see the entire post!

Animator Stephen Byrne has recently released this production diary of his journey bringing this amazingly perfect animated Firefly short to life (seriously, it’s about 2.5 seconds long). Take a peek and be sure to pull out your tissues.

Byrne’s production diary proves that bringing the world this seconds-long clip was truly a labor of love. His animation of Wash and Zoe is completely spot on, and he has managed to create what I can only imagine is the world record for Greatest Amount of Feels in the Shortest Period of Time…

Cinema Blend Post: 9 Gut-Wrenching Moments from The Walking Dead

Oh, The Walking Dead. That show loves to rip out our hearts, much like it did in Sunday’s mid-season finale. Because I’m apparently a glutton for pain, I’ve compiled a list of the 9 most gut-wrenching moments from The Walking Dead on Cinema Blend. I hope you’ll join me over there!

First of all, for those who aren’t caught up on The Walking Dead, this is a MAJOR spoiler alert. The list you are about to read is overflowing with major Walking Deadspoilers. If you aren’t caught up through the Season 5 mid-season finale, read on at your own risk.

The Walking Dead is a show notorious for some pretty gruesome moments, and some truly unsettling characters. However, if there is one thing this show is good at, it’s ripping our hearts out. Though the show has tons of gut-wrenching moments, these are the top nine moments that stomped on our hearts.

1. Andrea Loses Amy

In the first season Andrea’s sister, Amy, is killed by a walker. Amy’s death itself is completely random and tragic, and watching Andrea hold Amy as she dies is incredibly sad. However, watching Andrea try to cope with her sister’s death, descending into depression and thoughts of suicide makes Amy’s death even more gut-wrenching….

Cinema Blend Post: Clara’s Fate on Doctor Who Is Unclear

Hey, guys! I’m at Cinema Blend talking about Clara’s future on Doctor Who. After the series 8 finale (check my recap of Dark Water and A Death in Heaven) and several announcements in the press, it seemed like her days on the TARDIS might be numbered. However, after the release of the Christmas special sneak peek, Whovians started to wonder if Clara was indeed nearing the end of her run as companion. There were some interesting developments in the press today that have me even more curious. I’m talking about it at Cinema Blend!

We’ve been talking for months about the potential departure of Jenna Louise-Colemanfrom Doctor Who, and after the Season 8 finale, it seemed as though Clara’s days in the TARDIS were numbered. However, after Clara popped back up in the sneak peek for the Christmas special, some Whovians have started to wonder if we’ve really seen the last of Clara Oswald. It looks like we will have an official answer on Clara’s future in the TARDIS when we watch the Christmas special!

While Mirror UK ran a story this morning stating that Coleman will officially stay put as the Doctor’s companion, the new is nothing but a rumor at this point. When Radio Times contacted the BBC, a spokesperson for the network said…
