There is a lot of really cool stuff coming down the pike superhero-wise. There’s also a lot of stuff coming that has comic book and superhero movie fans alike pretty darn nervous. So let’s talk about what’s coming up.
1. Agent Carter
Can I just say how very excited I am for this? Here’s the official synopsis from Marvel:
“Marvel’s Agent Carter,” starring Captain America’s Hayley Atwell follows the story of Peggy Carter. It’s 1946, and peace has dealt Peggy Carter a serious blow as she finds herself marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad. Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), Peggy must balance doing administrative work and going on secret missions for Howard Stark all while trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life–Steve Rogers. Inspired by the feature films “Captain America: The First Avenger” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” along with the short “Marvel One-Shot: Agent Carter.”
Starring Hayley Atwell as Agent Peggy Carter, “Marvel’s Agent Carter” is executive produced by Christopher Markus, Steve McFeely, Tara Butters, Michele Fazekas, Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Jeph Loeb.
Let’s absolutely put this in the pile of superhero-related stuff that I am STOKED about. Right now they are saying the show will air over an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D hiatus–the estimation being over the winter– but an official release date hasn’t been set yet. I’m WAY behind on Agents, but I absolutely love the show. I think Marvel has done a great job showing us the different sides of the Marvel universe, from the individual superhero movies, to the Avengers movies, to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and now Agent Carter. Basically, Marvel gives you the option to drown yourself as deep into Marvel stories and characters as you’d like. I’m for that.
I am also really excited about Marvel’s decision to develop the story of an awesome female character. While DC fans are still anxiously awaiting a stand-alone Wonder Woman movie, Marvel is releasing stuff like Agent Carter and working out a standalone Black Widow flick. Marvel has some great female characters, and I’m glad they are allowing them a chance to shine on their own.
I’m definitely a Marvel girl (not that I don’t love DC characters, too), and I’m usually the first to stand by Marvel movies. I mean, sure, they’ve had their low points…
…but everybody has those periods in their life that they’d rather not mention, right? Despite my love of Marvel and Marvel movies, there is one set of superheroes and their movies that I always approach tentatively, which brings me to the second thing on my list.
It was officially announced today that Channing Tatum will be playing Gambit. What’s more, this won’t be an X-Men sequel, but it will be a standalone film. The X-Men movies have kind of been a mixed bag for me. I loved some, I’ve not loved some, and I’ve just not cared about some. So I really don’t know what to think about this Channing Tatum-Gambit movie, mainly because I’m really having a hard time trusting Tatum to do justice to Gambit by portraying him as more than a hot guy with some sick fighting skills. Gambit has a unique attitude and charisma behind his pretty face and tricky fighting. Gambit can be tough to trust, but he is also a guy that you love. I don’t know if Channing Tatum can be that guy. I also don’t know if Channing Tatum can pull of the Louisiana accent.
The other thing? I really liked Taylor Kitsch as Gambit. Like I said before, the X-Men movies can be quite the mixed bag, and unfortunately for Kitsch I don’t think he got to star in one of the better X-Men flicks (X-Men Origins: Wolverine). Still, when I see this Gambit:
I get kind of bummed out that this is our new Gambit:
Hey! Speaking of concerning casting…
The first picture of Ben Affleck as Batman was published today.
*sigh* Here’s my thing with Batman movies: there hasn’t really been one end all, be all Batman. While you can always expect Peter Parker to be awkwardly charming, and Thor to be a loveable Asgardian warrior, Batman’s character varies pretty greatly depending on who portrays him. We’ve got the Adam West Batman, cartoonish and a bit goofy. We’ve got the Val Kilmer/Michael Keaton/George Clooney Batmans, cartoonish but a bit darker. Then we have the Bale Batman. Nothing cartoonish or goofy about that Batman, just dark and gloomy with a scratchy voice. So, am I dubious of Ben Affleck’s ability to do justice to Batman? Sure. However, since Batman is one of those superheroes which have gone through so many extremely different incarnations, this role will really only add to the Batman universe. Yeah, it may suck, which will be bad news for the Justice League movie, but Batman has really had his fair share of good and bad interpretations. We can just add this one to the pile.
But there is something Batman-related that I’m tentatively excited about…
I really love this new wave of superhero shows that let us see the side of fighting crime that we don’t normally see, the everyday humans working tirelessly along the superheroes to keep the peace, like in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Agent Carter, and now Gotham. I think adding that often ignored part of a superhero’s world really adds a lot of richness to the stories of our favorite superheroes. Gotham will focus on the infamous city before Bruce Wayne becomes Batman. Instead, the show will focus on Commissioner Gordon, and his rise from rookie cop to Commissioner. We’ll see Bruce Wayne’s parents die, we’ll see some of the famous Batman Big Bads like Penguin, the Joker, and Catwoman before they come into their Big Bad selves, and of course the show will have some original bad guys as well. I think this show could be really, really cool, but Fox has a bad reputation of being quick to give shows the ax (need I even mention Firefly?). I posted a first look at Gotham below. The show looks like it has a ton of potential, but I’m waiting to get my hopes up until I actually can see a few episodes.
5. Avengers 2
Okay, there isn’t really any new news on this one, but I cannot WAIT for this movie to hit theaters. Seriously, OH MY GOODNESS. Let’s just look at some of the released pics from the movie:
I don’t have anything clever to say about Avengers 2, I’m just really, really excited. 2015 can’t come soon enough.
How about you? How do you feel about the new movies and TV shows coming to us from the DC and Marvel universe? Sound off in the comments!
