Matt Smith Will Be in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

[heads up if you’re not caught up on Doctor Who–minor spoilers ahead]

I started watching Doctor Who in the Matt Smith era. He’s the one who pulled me into the series, so even though I loved Tennant’s Doctor, I really appreciate Eccleston’s sassy Doctor, and I’m really enjoying getting to know Capaldi’s Doctor, Smith will always be my Doctor. And ever since this moment:

tragedy

…I’ve had a Raggedy Man-shaped hole in my life. So yes, Matt Smith is officially done playing the Doctor–at least for the foreseeable future, though you never know with this show. I mean…

…and then…

…so you never know, really. Regardless, we’re in the era of Twelve, and though I’ll miss Smith as the Doctor, I know it’s time to move on.

let go

Still, a world without Matt Smith in the realm of the nerds is a sad one, indeed. Thankfully, it seems he doesn’t plan to stray too far from us at all. In February of 2015, he will be in Ryan Gosling’s writing and directorial debut, a fantasy thriller called Lost River, and in July of 2015 we can see him in Terminator: Gensys alongside everyone’s favorite Khaleesi, Emilia Clarke, as Sarah Connor.

That’s all great, but I cannot tell you how excited I was to hear that Matt Smith will be combining my love of, well, him…

…with my love of zombies.

Yes, yes, kids, Matt Smith has officially signed on to star as Mr. Collins in the upcoming film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. It’s kind of perfect casting, actually. Mr. Collins is kind of a goofy character, and Matt Smith is, well…

drunk giraffe

Okay, so maybe the Drunk Giraffe is a bit nuttier than what we can expect from Mr. Collins, but still, I couldn’t think of a better person to be cast in this role. Sure, the story of PPZ is a bit crazy, and it seems that all of our movies these days are either sequels, book-to-movie adaptations, or American remakes of foreign films. I’m also well aware that this movie will be releasing under the dark specter of the box office bomb, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Regardless, I am helpless to resist the pull of anything zombie or Smith-related, and this news has got me more than a little excited.

excited

It seems 2015 is going to be the year of Smith in the Cinema, as Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is set to release next year as well (no word on a specific release date yet). What do you think? Are you going to see Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, or do you think we’ll have another Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter on our hands? Let me know in the comments!

    Oh man, I hope it doesn’t turn into an Abe Lincoln bomb fest. I actually liked the Vampire Hunter book, but I hated the movie! I think PPZ might do better, though, because people seem to be way more into zombies than vampires, these days, (thank you Twilight). I’m so excited to see Matt Smith’s career blossom beyond the world of Doctor Who. Tennant is first in my heart, but Smith was pretty darn special. I think there’s bound to be more 11th cameos on DW in the future. There has to be!

      That would be fun if there were more 11 cameos! And I think you’re right that people like zombies more. Really hoping the movie does well–though it’s already got a point in its favor with Smith on board! 🙂

    Awesome post! Like you, Matt Smith is the first Doctor I started with, and though I love all the Doctors, his absence leaves a bit of a hole in my heart! But Matt Smith AND Jane Austen AND zombies! Yes, please!
